Park Lane Press Support Prestigious Green Awards 2009

Park Lane Press of Corsham, Wiltshire is supporting the 2009 Green Awards, in celebration of their own environmental achievements over the last 10 years and to recognise businesses striving to achieve similar standards. The firm has won a clutch of 4 green awards within the last 12 months and will be sponsoring the printing of all the Green Awards promotional materials.

The Green Awards recognise and reward creative work that communicates the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility, sustainable development and ethical best practice, in any sector and across any marketing discipline.

Park Lane Press is one of only a handful of waterless printers in the UK, placing them at the cutting edge of high quality ‘green’ print. Natural vegetable based inks are used and over 90% of their paper is from Forest Stewardship Council approved sources. Their environmentally friendly approach has helped attract clients, ranging from The National Trust to The Eden Project, Green Alliance and Christian Aid.

Philip Sudwell, Managing Director of Park Lane Press said, “each year we try to implement new green ideas into the way we operate and by supporting the award, we are demonstrating our belief that this is the way forward. Waterless printing saves precious resources, reduces waste and removes the need for harmful solvents; from a purely commercial perspective alone, this has saved an estimated 58,000 litres of solvent and a staggering 7,300,000 litres of water! Our most recent initiative has been to install a Powerperfector to regulate and reduce electricity usage.

I would urge all businesses to see green, not as a compromise in quality or an additional cost but the complete opposite. It’s what our customers demand and we have proved it is possible to place green issues at the heart of a successful business, without jeopardising product quality or our bottom line.”

Double Impact at Lower Prices

Park Lane Press have doubled their digital print capacity after acquiring another Canon ImagePRESS C7000VP.

Park Lane’s digital print has really taken off creating the requirement for a second ImagePress. Phil Sudwell, Managing Director commented on the recent trend:

“The Canon equipment has proven to be a successful addition to our plant list. I am delighted with the quality that the machines provide, and in my view are the best on the market. The added advantage is that our prices are very competitive compared to other digital print providers, to the point where we are winning new clients on a daily basis. Additionally, now that we have two machines we can commit to tighter deadlines if necessary.

We encourage customers to initially provide a trial pdf for us to print a few copies free of charge. When they see the quality and the price, they tend to switch, as the marketplace has some very poor digital print being sold at exorbitant prices.

Initially, we were simply producing short run work such as brochures and leaflets, however there is an increasing requirement for personalised targeted mailings, which can be digitally printed at a fraction of the cost of the traditional splatter gun approach. Working so closely with our clients to produce these tailored campaigns, has helped to build and strengthen customer relationships.”

Libby Ferguson, Park Lane’s environmental initiatives manager commented:

“Customers are also responding positively to the environmental specifications of the Canon. The only waste stream being the toner ink cartridges that are recycled, no solvents are used, it prints on most environmentally friendly coated and uncoated papers, and most particularly, isn’t limited to sapphire coated papers as some other digital machines are.”

Our customers know we are passionate about the environment and now our industry has recognised us too. The team at Park Lane Press are immensely proud of these awards and the hard work they represent in maintaining cutting edge print quality that’s also green”.

The investment in technology and use of the latest equipment by Park Lane Press mean their waterless printing process is capable of pin sharp reproduction of images and fantastic ‘colour lift’, especially on uncoated paper stock. The majority of the paper they use also comes from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) accredited sources and the inks are vegetable based so the complete print process is as environmentally friendly as possible.

Phil concluded by saying “We will soon be developing our supply chain and factory practices further to maintain our reputation in the rapidly expanding field of environmental print and we are excited at the new possibilities this will offer our customers”.

Purchases Of FSC Paper Soar

Park Lane Press became accredited with the FSC chain of custody certificate in April 2007. This meant adapting existing Environmental and Quality Management Systems to incorporate vetting of paper suppliers, segmenting of FSC paper and FSC labelling of paper throughout the production process from order to invoice.

Park Lane also encouraged and educated customers of the now extended range of FSC stocks available to them, and they were pleasantly surprised to find in most cases prices remained competitive.

Park Lane’s total paper purchases from FSC stocks rose from 15% to 60%, equating to just under 350 tonnes.

Phil Sudwell, Managing Director of Park Lane said we hope to increase the percentage of paper sourced from FSC accredited suppliers to 75% in 2008.

It Pays To Be Green

Phil Sudwell managing director of Corsham based commercial printers Park Lane Press, recently spoke at a national conference on 10th March titled Strategies for Success: How to use the environment to maximise commercial opportunities.

Park Lane have found that since becoming one of the top green printers in the country, their sales derived from clients demanding green print has grown extensively to now account for 25% of their £2.2 million turnover. This was one of the reasons Print and Paper Monthly invited Phil to speak at their annual conference.

Phil comments that his clients really appreciate the reduced impact on the environment Park Lane can provide, they like to advertise the fact with statements such as “Printed using the environmentally friendly waterless print process, vegetable based inks on paper from FSC accredited sustainable sources” in addition the FSC and waterless logos are used. They don’t appear to mind the space it takes up on their marketing collateral, the more green credentials the better it appears.

Phil concluded his talk with a positive forecast of an increase in demand for this type of work, as it doesn’t cost any extra than conventional print, and quality is actually enhanced by the waterless technology resulting in a win, win situation for all.

Pure Carbon Offsetting

Park Lane have further extended our environmental progress by taking positive steps to measure, limit and offset our carbon footprint.

December 2007 The Carbon Trust undertook a thorough examination of our operations and have issued us with; i) a carbon footprint of 95* tCO2e p.a., ii) a method of monitoring our footprint and iii) a plan to reduce it.

Throughout 2008 Park Lane will work to reduce our Carbon Footprint by following the plans set out in the auditors report, and in addition we will be offsetting all our emissions with the charity Pure.

Pure are a non-profit making organisation with only 14% of donations absorbed by expenses, and do not own a recognised brand for Carbon Offsetting like Carbon Neutral or Climate Care. Pure is a charity which use verified government approved offsetting schemes.

The following information has been taken from Pure’s website - www.puretrust.org.uk

PURE financially support Kyoto Protocol emissions reduction projects around the world. Emission reductions are audited and verified by the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism; or for UK projects by the National Energy. Emissions reduction are witnessed by carbon credits; that might then be used by polluters within Kyoto emissions trading schemes for compliance purposes. However, the Trustees then cancel these credits from the international register which limits the amount of greenhouse gases that polluting companies are allowed to release into the atmosphere. This method both meets the proposed UK Government Code of Best Practice for carbon offsetting and offers a dual environmental benefit.

As a result, Pure:
• Is more effective against climate change
• Directly supports Kyoto Process
• Acts more rapidly against climate change
• Reduces carbon PLUS smog & acid rain
• Is fully transparent in terms of process and pricing

*Our carbon footprint of 95* tCO2e p.a. excludes electricity usage as our energy supply is sourced from natural renewable sources via Good Energy (see www.energywatch.org.uk/help_and_advice/green_tariffs/fuel_mix_disclosure.asp).
